Edit airports in 3D, inside X-Plane

World Editor 3D is an airport and scenery editor that works in the sim, on the real terrain, with the real models. It replaces Laminar's 2D WorldEditor for what you place around an airport.

  • Open source · MIT
  • X-Plane 12
  • Windows 10/11

What you can edit

Pick, move and rotate with a 3D gizmo, with undo, an outliner with search and filters, and an asset browser that shows a picture of each model.

Objects

Any object from X-Plane's library and your scenery, found in a folder browser with thumbnails or by search. Your pack's objects are drawn live, so edits show at once.

Structures

Group objects into a structure, save it, and place it again anywhere: a hangar with its doors and lights, a fuel station, a whole apron.

Pavements, runways, taxi lines

Edit pavements and runways, textured while you edit them, plus taxiway lines and start points.

Routes with roles

Splines for vehicles and cameras. A role says what a route is for, such as the glider tow lane, so other add-ons find it without knowing its name.

Trigger volumes

Boxes, spheres and capsules with a name and a role. Graphs and scripts react when the aircraft enters one, leaves it or stays inside.

Sites

Points other add-ons use, like a glider winch, its launch point and its depot. Career Mode reads them for its winch launches.

How it works

  1. In X-Plane, open Plugins → World Editor 3D → Edit the nearest airport, or bind the command worldeditor3d/toggle.
  2. The editor loads the airport from your scenery and shows it as it is.
  3. Edit in 3D: add from the Add menu, move with the gizmo, size triggers with their handles, group objects into structures.
  4. Save writes a complete scenery pack in Custom Scenery. Objects show at once; the rest of the pack appears after an X-Plane restart.

Works alone, better with the others

World Editor 3D needs nothing else. With the other add-ons installed:

  • graphs follow its routes, live while you edit them;
  • graphs and scripts react to its trigger volumes;
  • Career Mode's glider winch launches use its sites.

What it writes, and the messages other plugins can use, are documented in docs/FORMAT.md, so any add-on can read its files.

A C++17 core with no X-Plane code in it (apt.dat, DSF, library, document, undo, splines, structures) and a thin X-Plane plugin.
